Rev. Larry Sprouse

In his 22 years at Melrose, Larry Sprouse has led the church in physical and spiritual growth. Larry is a graduate of East Tennessee State University and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary of Louiseville, Kentucky. Larry's post-graduate work is in the areas of individual and family therapy. Larry is a professional pastoral counselor and certified at the Fellow level in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors (AAPC). Larry has served as President of the Board of Directors of the Mental Health Association of the Roanoke Valley. Larry loves the outdoors and enjoys fly-fishing, backpacking, hunting and training English Setters.

Larry and his wife Jan have been married for 35 years. Jan is a graduate of the University of Tennessee (B.S.) And Lynchburg College (M.Ed.) Jan works as a professional counselor.

Along with a wonderful and gifted staff, Larry is leading the church in new directions with renewed vigor.

NEWS! - Congratulations to our Pastor!!

On November 6-7, 1998 at the mid-Atlantic regional meeting of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors (AAPC), Larry was certified at the Fellow Level. The Fellow category represents the advanced level in the practice of professional pastoral counseling.

Larry had to pass requirements that gave evidence of an advanced level of integration of personhood, theology, pastoral identity, psychological theory and therapeutic skills. Congratulations to our Pastor on this remarkable professional achievement!!!

Rev. Helen Riley

Helen Riley has been our Minister of Education and Minister of Sr. Adults spanning almost a decade. Her accomplishments are statewide and beyond as she has served denominationally as well. Thanks Helen, and we're glad you're still serving with us!

Rev. Wally Mayo

Associate Pastor/Minister of Music

Wally Mayo came to Melrose in February of 1997 after just completing a Master's degree in conducting from Florida State University. He there served as a co-conductor of the FSU Choral Union, a 60-voice choral group. Also in Tallahassee, Wally served in music for 12 years at Forest Heights Baptist Church.

Prior education includes a Master's degree at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1984, and an undergraduate degree in music education from FSU in 1975 (where he studied with the emminent Clayton Krehbiel, who was for many years the assistant director of the Robert Shaw Chorale). There was special study in music business including copyright law, music publishing, and studio engineering at Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee. Wally also taught high school music in Pensacola, Florida from 1976-78.

Presently, Wally has a number of choral and keyboard pieces published with four publishers. He has been active as a clinician for a number of music conferences, especially in the area of MIDI, computer music scoring, and copyright law. He has served as one of the judges for the district VII choral festival held at Northside High School in Roanoke, Virginia.

His hobbies include amateur radio, computers, meteorology, and table tennis. Wally oversees the church website at www.melrosebaptist.org as well as a regional weather website at www.weatherroanoke.com. He and his wife, Melinda, love being in the mountains and enjoy the culture and people of the Roanoke Valley.

Rev. Brenda Rowe

Associate Pastor/Minister to Senior Adults

 

Reverend Brenda Rowe joined the Melrose Staff November 2001. She comes with twenty-seven years of ministry experience. Her ministry began at Connelly Memorial Baptist as the Minister of Outreach and Youth serving for ten years. Brenda joined the staff of Bethel Baptist as an Associate Minister. During the 15 years with Bethel, she served in many areas - Minister to Children, Youth, Outreach, Singles, Sr. Adult, Singles, Education, Church Administrator and Associate Pastor/Pastoral Care.

Brenda was ordained in 1989. She has served in leadership positions and active on numerous committees in the Roanoke Valley Baptist Association. She was the First Vice-President of the VA Baptist Youth Ministers Association at the beginning of this organization. She was affiliated with Super Week Youth Camps for 17 years being the director for three of these years.

Brenda has had training in all areas of church ministry with classes in counseling for all age groups. Her training in Pastoral Care and Continuing Education as a Hospital Chaplain has been beneficial to her ministry.

Brenda and Maurice's family include a daughter and son-in-law, a son and grandson. Traveling, reading golf and entertaining are some of her favorite things to do.

Greg Hetherington

Minister to Children and Youth

 

Greg Hetherington is our most recent addition to our ministerial staff, join us in 2009. He has past churches in .

Greg is a graduate of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY.

He has a rich history in sports, especially volleyball, where he has coached a number of champion teams.
